Welcome!

I’m Kate and I live in southern California.

In April 2009, I was at my heaviest weight. I didn’t like the way I looked or felt, and one night I made the decision to lose weight for good. I went from meat-eater to vegan overnight, and started losing weight by eating less processed foods and counting calories. I worked at a gym, so with a free membership, there was no excuse for me not to go. I ran a few times a week, only going a mile or two at a time. I did cross country for my first two years of high school, but didn’t keep up running when I quit, so I had to begin at square one.

On New Year’s Eve 2009, I went for a 2.5 mile run. I decided that my New Year’s Resolution was to run a 5k in February. I committed myself to running about 5 times a week, and before I knew it, my mileage was increasing from 2 to 4 miles. Rather than a 5k, I set my sights on a 10k that April. On March 1st (a day that will live in infamy), I ran 10 miles without stopping. I figured, if I could do that, why do a 10k? I could do a half marathon!

On May 2, four months after I started taking running seriously, I ran my first half marathon. As soon as I crossed the finish line, I thought, “I think I’ll run a marathon!

I had reached my lowest weight and I felt great. However, when I started training for the marathon, I began binge-eating after long runs (and sometimes after short ones, too!) The mysterious ‘marathon weight gain’ I had heard about had found me… all 24 pounds of it.

Despite a large weight gain in a small amount of time, I finished my training (and threw in a 5k along the way) and crossed the finish line of the Long Beach Marathon on October 17, 2010. I was a little slower than I hoped, but I made all three of my goals- I didn’t cry, walk or throw up once!

I’m not running as much as I used to, but I’m training for my first 10k on Thanksgiving, another 10k on December 12, and my second half marathon in January.

Race PRs:

5k: 24:39 (August 14, 2010)

10k: 53:59 (November 25, 2010)

Half marathon: 2:08:53 (May 2, 2010)

Marathon: 4:44:32 (October 17, 2010)

Although I became a vegan in April 2009, I started eating meat and dairy again that July. I went to Australia that month and I was convinced there would be no vegetarian options. On December 1, 2009, I became a vegetarian again, and have been ever since- with another 6 months of veganism from February to August this year. That’s a lot of changes!

I LOVE to bake and experiment in the kitchen. I want to improve my cooking skills as well. I can make basic things, but I’ve had my mishaps- maybe one day I’ll put up pictures of the time I put a cutting board in the oven. 🙂

Outside of running and cooking, I’m going to school for a degree in English and am planning on moving to Fort Collins, Colorado, sometime next year to finish school. My other great passions are reading and TRAVELING! One of my goals in life is to visit every continent. Here’s hoping!

I plan to focus this blog on my life in and out of the kitchen. Baking, cooking, running, and exploring in general!

    Love your story and your name- I got skinny running a half M too, and then stacked it abck on when I started doing marathons and other endurance events. I lived in Fort Collins for four years when I was a wee kid- such a great town!

    • Someone named Kate that runs marathons, lived in Fort Collins, and has the word ‘potato’ in their blog name? Awesome! You’re like a really, really fast version of me! (I just saw your race times- damn, you’re awesome!)

    You are such a great inspiration Kate! My New Year’s Resolution this year is to run a 5K. I used to run cross country in high school, but it has been 4 years since I ran regularly. Thanks for the motivation to find a new pair of running shoes and get out the door this week! 🙂

    • My best piece of advice would be to sign up for a race and follow (or make) a training plan. It’s really easy to get unmotivated, but if you know what you should be doing, it’s a lot easier! Good luck!!
