And the Oscar Goes To…

Ice on my car, ice in my breakfast πŸ™‚

Even though the ‘big storm’ that everyone in California was freaking out about never really came, it must have gotten really cold last night. I spent ten minutes scraping ice off my car this morning! Luckily it didn’t make me late for cycling. After a good workout, I was ready for a good breakfast. Cake batter smoothie made with chocolate protein powder instead of the vanilla I had been using, topped with a Vitatop = perfection.

I feel like I have always smoothies for lunch on Sundays. I think that’s because I always buy way too much spinach at Costco and have to find a way to use it!

I had an apple with peanut butter (times two!) and strawberries as well.

Followed by pumpkin yogurt-

Dinner was hastily made while watching the Oscars! I made a savory oatmeal cookie and topped it with black beans and Greek yogurt. Not as good as the cheesy version πŸ™‚

(I also inhaled about two more pounds of strawberries, some clementines, and a few handfuls of cereal after dinner and I think I’m honestly going to starve to death… why am I so hungry today?!)

I kind of live for the Oscars each year. I totally fill out the ballot and everything- I only got half of the winners right, though. Boo!

Thoughts of the night!

Favorite dress-

I think most people probably hated this dress, but I loved it! All she needs is a brush to comb her hair with πŸ™‚

Best Supporting Actress-

SO glad she won! I loved Amy Adams and Hailee Steinfeld too, but no one compared to Melissa Leo. Also, she dropped the f-bomb on national TV and that makes her my hero.

Best Supporting Actor-

I was really surprised by how much I loved this movie. Christian Bale deserves an Oscar for pretty much every movie he’s been in (except Batman πŸ™‚ ) so I was really happy he won. Also, his beard tonight was epic. Terrifying, but epic.

Best Actress-

I knew she was going to win, but I was still disappointed! I saw all of the movies that were nominated in this category and she would have been my last choice. It wasn’t that she was bad- it was that Annette Bening and Michelle Williams were better πŸ™‚

Best Actor-

I didn’t see this movie, but I don’t doubt that Colin Firth was good in it. I would have liked to see Jesse Eisenberg win, though.

Best Picture-

Again, I didn’t see it, so I can’t say whether it deserved it or not. I think Blue Valentine should have been nominated and won. That’s definitely the best movie I’ve seen lately!

Best Former Oscar Winner-

Sean Penn has nothing to do with this year’s Oscars, I just wanted to include him because he’s the love of my life. He wasn’t even there this year! Why, Sean, why?! I miss your smug smile!

Did you watch the Oscars this year?

Now You Know My ABCs!

Are you sick of random facts about me? Too bad, I love doing stuff like this!

(A) Age:Β 21. I spent my teenager years counting down the days until this birthday and by the time it came, I didn’t even care πŸ™‚

(B) Bed Size: I think it’s a twin? There are two twin beds in my room… because there are two twins in there!

(C) Chore You Hate: I kind of hate all chores, especially ones that pertain to cleaning bathrooms. I’d rather clean the toilet than clean the shower, though. Is there a comfortable way to clean a shower? Answer- no.

(D) Dogs? I’m a bird person πŸ™‚

(E) Essential Start To Your Day: Breakfast! Always, always, always.

(F) Favorite Color: Burnt orange and mustard yellow. Any autumnal color, really πŸ™‚

(G) Gold or Silver? Silver.

(H) Height:Β 5’6 and 3/4. My driver’s license says 5’7″. I am slightly bitter because my doctor once told me I would be 5’8″. I have hardly grown between my sixth grade graduation and now… no joke!

(I) Instruments You Play: None. I can play a few songs on the piano, though…

…well enough that I can play in public and get complimented by a stranger, apparently πŸ™‚

(J) Job Title: Kid’s Club Babysitter

(K) Kids: Eventually. I really want two girls!

(L) Live: Orange County. I feel grateful to have grown up here, but I am SO ready for a change. I’ve lived here my whole life!

(M) Mom’s Name: Erika.

(N) Nicknames: Kate is a nickname for Katherine. I’ve also been known to go by Katie and Chach (long story πŸ™‚ )

(O) Overnight Hospital Stays? I don’t think I’ve had any, but if memory serves, either my sister or I had to return to the hospital for a little bit a week after we were born. And by memory serving, I mean that one of my parents told me that… I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast, let alone going to the hospital when I was a week old!

(P) Pet Peeve: Slow moving people. People that drive slowly, walk slowly, talk slowly… ugh, it’s the worst!

(Q) Quote from a Movie: ‘Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?’ -American Psycho

(R) Right or Left Handed?Β Right.

(S) Siblings: Older brother and twin sister.

(T) Time You Wake Up? Between 6 and 7. I slept until almost 7 today and it was glorious.

(U) Underwear: Yes, I’m wearing it? It matches my shirt, too!

(V) Vegetable You Dislike: Beets… blech! Do pickles count? Because I hate pickles.

(W) What Makes You Run Late: Myself! I have poor time management skills.

(X) X-Rays You’ve Had Done: I think I’ve just had my teeth done… although I have memories of getting them done in a different office that was definitely not for my teeth. I have no idea what it could be, though!

(Y) Yummy Food You Make: My breakfast was pretty good… recipe at the end πŸ™‚

(Z) Zoo, Favorite Animal: Monkeys, penguins, toucans, coatis… probably coatis!

Back to my breakfast- I had bought two jars of carrot baby food because I saw a recipe that called for it. I could not find the recipe for the life of me, so I made one up!

It had to involve bananas… when your bananas look like that, you have to use them so your family stops complaining about the house smelling like them.

Baby Food Muffins

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 8 oz (2 jars) pureed baby food carrots
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 cup egg whites

  • Mix baby food, bananas, applesauce, and egg whites.

  • Add flour, baking powder, and pumpkin pie spice.

  • Pour into muffin pans and bake at 325 degrees for 40 minutes.
  • Best served on top of oat bran πŸ™‚

But plain is good, too!

Your turn! Letter H- How tall are you? I am a creeping creeper who creeps and love finding out people’s heights… which is why I love reading these surveys on other blogs!

Good Things Come To Those Who Run

I tried to fight it off, but it looks like a cold caught up to me last night. Nothing like a warm breakfast to soothe a sore throat!

I had some voluminous oat bran topped with a chocolate Vitatop. Ahhh, much better πŸ™‚

Before work, I headed to Panera to do a little studying. I stuck to mostly decaf coffee- no Spidey vision for me today!

I got stuck talking to a co-worker after work, so I didn’t have time to go to cycling like I had planned. Instead, I headed home to make lunch.

I roasted half a turnip, broccoli, and a potato to crispy perfection. I’m always so happy when I take the time to roast veggies- they really taste so much better that way.

Pumpkin yogurt was eaten shortly after-

I can’t get enough cinnamon Cheerios. I have to get them while I can (aka, before my brother devours them)

Happy apple with PB-

I had several options for exercise today-

A. Skip cycling and go to the gym for the elliptical

B. Do my long run today, before I get too sick and before it rains all weekend

C. Lay on my couch, wallow in my sorrows and regret not doing my run

I was really, really close to picking option C, but I went with option B and am SO glad I did! This is the third time I’ve trained for a big race, and within the first week, I have always gotten sick and it has always started raining. Just my luck, huh?

I had 7 miles on the agenda, so I told myself to suck it up and just do it. So, so glad it’s over with.

I love the way the sky looks before it rains- when it’s still sunny, but you can see the dark clouds coming in.

I managed to knock out 7 miles in 1:06:50- a 9:32/min mile pace! It didn’t even feel that hard, either. I don’t want to jinx myself- but I think I am getting a little faster πŸ™‚ 10:30 used to be my comfortable pace!

I was happy to come home so I could EAT!

Introducing- a delicious dinner born out of a conflicting desire to eat both oatmeal and cheese together.

Sweet and Cheesy Oatmeal Cookie

Ingredients (Base):

  • 5 tbsp oats
  • 2 tbsp egg whites
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder

  • Mix all ingredients in a shallow, microwave safe bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes.

2 tablespoons Greek yogurt

1/4 cup feta cheese

A caramelized onion

2 tablespoons dried cranberries

This was amazing. The base is the applesauce breakfast cookie I had yesterday, just without cinnamon. The whole dish is sweet and savory- my favorite combination!

I know I said I was going to try to stop snacking at night, but I made a conscious decision to eat this, so I don’t feel bad about it.

Not going to lie- I actually decided I was going to get this as a reward for going on my run. Considering I was ready to scrap my long run altogether, I thought I deserved a little reward. I know you’re not supposed to reward yourself with food, but let’s be honest- we could always use a little push out the door once in a while, and if I know I’m going to be enjoying a pint of ice cream as a result of going on said long run, I’m going to go πŸ™‚

Do you ever reward yourself for doing something you really don’t want to do? I feel like a dog rewarding myself with food, but hey- whatever works!

Night Prowler

Breakfast was an old favorite with a new favorite!

I made an applesauce breakfast cookie and topped it with the rest of the nut butter Kat gave me. Yes, it is already gone. Yes, I am a greedy nut butter eater and did not share with anyone else πŸ™‚

Easy breezy lunch-

My lunches have been really uncreative lately, but it’s about eating what you love- and I do love burritos, pumpkin yogurt, and apples with peanut butter πŸ™‚

Speaking of Kat… I saw a recipe for quinoa flax pizza crust on her blog today and gave it a try for dinner.

I topped the crust with hummus and spinach. I was too lazy and hungry to do much else, but it was really good! It kind of reminds me of an oatmeal bread my mom used to make.

In lieu of my nightly bowl of ice cream, I had another sweet treat- the white chocolate tea I showed you yesterday.

I like most kinds of tea, but this one was especially delicious! Not too sweet, and it really tastes like white chocolate. So happy I have three boxes of this stuff πŸ™‚

Lately, I’ve been eating bigger dinners, and combined with ice cream and other snacks after dinner, I’ve been waking up still full- never a good feeling. Heather wrote a post about this that I found really helpful. I never used to snack at night, but now that I’ve been doing it more often, I feel like my body is getting used to it. I’m not actually hungry after dinner- quite the opposite- so I know my need for a snack is a mental thing.

I have no problem eating dessert every day (obviously πŸ™‚ ) but I also feel as though I’ve been eating a bit too many sweets, which is crowding out my vegetable / fruit consumption.

What to do about this? I think I’m going to take Heather’s cue and start eating fruit after dinner instead of whatever I can scrounge up from the kitchen. I never feel like a meal is finished until I have something sweet, so I think fruit will be the perfect way to end dinner without feeling too full.

Are you a night snacker?

Good Mail Day

I gave oat bran another try for breakfast this morning!

Heather suggested that I soak the oat bran overnight to add some volume, so I finally remembered to prepare it last night πŸ™‚ Look how big it is! (That’s what she said) So much more filling. I topped it with half a banana and a special kind of nut butter- Kat‘s cranberry almond butter! More on that later πŸ™‚

Lunch was leftover soup-

And pumpkin yogurt-

My long run never happened today. I was planning on running home from school, but it started raining in between classes, so I was mentally preparing myself to go home and have lunch instead. It wasn’t raining when I got out, but I was so hungry I went home instead πŸ™‚

I ended up doing my faster, shorter run today. I had planned on five miles, but only had time to do four. I finished in 35:56 (8:59) pace. It was so hard! For me, that’s a pretty fast pace, and I was definitely feeling it. I definitely need to do more of those runs if I want to maintain that pace for 9 more miles!

I had an apple with PB after my run, and spaghetti squash for dinner.

So much going on in this bowl- a whole spaghetti squash on the bottom, topped with broccoli, tofu, tomato sauce, spinach, and feta. I’m aware that this looks like a serving dish, but I ate the whole thing πŸ™‚

I also ate a pint of ice cream after dinner. I saw Rabbit Hole with some friends and couldn’t resist going to Sprouts for a pint of Arctic Zero!

I was tagged by Heather and Lauren for two different awards- the Versatile Blogger and 7 Facts Blog Awards!

I’ve already written random facts about me before, but since I am incredibly vain like doing stuff like this, I thought I would come up with seven more πŸ™‚

1. I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 18, and I failed my test the first time because I hit a pole at the end of my test (automatic fail!) A week after I got my license, I backed into a car, and a few months later I sideswiped my friend’s car and backed into a pole and knocked my side mirror off in the same night. I haven’t hit anything since- knock on wood! I swear I am really not a bad driver…

2. I don’t consider myself overly paranoid about germs but I cannot stand public bathrooms. Going into one actually makes me feel physically uncomfortable, and I have to rip off toilet paper in a specific way to make sure that no one else has touched it.

3. I’ve been told that Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and I have similar personalities… I think it’s the hypochondria.

4. I have to write notes really neatly in class, and I will spend way more time than necessary recopying them if they don’t turn out well the first time.

5. I can’t read a map or give directions to save my life- I have lived in the same city my whole life and couldn’t tell you how to get anywhere!

6. If I could talk to my teenage self, I would tell myself that sneaking off to Denny’s in the middle of the night with your co-workers will only lead to getting grounded and gaining weight and NOT WORTH IT!

7. Very few things make me happier than getting / sending mail. I love to make cards for the holidays and send them to my grandparents and friends that live out of the state, and I love getting packages…

…especially from fellow bloggers!

I won Kat‘s giveaway last week, and I was so pleased to see a package on my doorstep yesterday!

Look at these goods! Three boxes of this tea, which I am so excited to try-

Some delicious looking snack bars (unpictured, as they are hiding from my brother, the human trash compactor)

And behold… the most delicious nut butter I have ever tried.

I have tried a lot of nut butters in my day, so I am taking this very seriously- best nut butter in the history of nut butters. Cranberry almond butter- what is not to love? It tastes like a snickerdoodle cookie all blended up and covered in cranberries. Thank you Kat!!!

Excuse me while I go back for another spoonful fingerful. This stuff is like crack!

What’s the last good thing you got in the mail?

10 Weeks

It has been unseasonably cold here for the past week, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop drinking smoothies!

I had Kaitlin‘s cake batter smoothie for breakfast and added a few handfuls of spinach for some greens. I topped the smoothie with a bean brownie– gotta balance those veggies with something sweet πŸ™‚

Lunch was nothing new-

Spinach, beans, Greek yogurt, and a spinach pancake. I dropped my yogurt AGAIN today! Thankfully Greek yogurt does not spill as easily as regular πŸ™‚

Pumpkin yogurt-

Not pictured- an apple with peanut butter and ice cream. I’ve been going through ice cream super fast. I think I need to lay off it a little!

I packed a sandwich, blueberries, and clementines to take to work. I normally eat when I get home at 8, but since I didn’t feel like going to the gym before class this morning, I went after work to get some speedwork done!

I wrote a card with different intervals on it so I had an idea of what I wanted to do on the treadmill. Too bad I left it at home! I was meeting friends after work, so I kept it short and did 2.4 miles in 20 minutes. Something is better than nothing πŸ™‚

Today’s run was a special occasion- it was the first run of my half-marathon training plan!

I’m pretty bad at following training plans. I totally winged it for my first half-marathon, but loosely followed Hal Higdon’s beginner’s plan for the last few weeks.

For my full marathon, I did my best to follow Hal Higdon’s beginner plan, but I ended up slacking off the last few weeks.

I decided I really wanted to follow a training plan for my race in 10 weeks. I really, really want to break 2 hours! My current (and only!) PR is 2:08:53, so I have a little work to do.

I’m taking it week by week, because my schedule changes a lot, so the days I run and the distances I complete will be determined by when I can fit them in.

I plan to run 3 days a week, and possibly a 4th run if I’m feeling up to it. This may sound crazy, but I want to focus on quality runs, not running just to run.

My runs will be as such-

  • One speedwork session a week (minimum 30 minutes)
  • One medium length run (between 4-7 miles) done at my goal pace (9:00-9:10 minute miles)
  • One long run (7+ miles) done at a comfortable pace (probably a 10:00 minute mile)

My other days will be filled with cross training- cycling, yoga, strength training, elliptical, and all that jazz. I also plan to take one full rest day a week.

I already have the first week (this week!) planned out, and I plan to stick this bad boy on my bulletin board to keep me on track. I’m leaving the mileage blank on the bottom until the week is over, because I want it to be accurate in case I change it πŸ™‚

My other weeks will be similar, but I want to wait to officially plan them until I know which races I’ll be doing before the half-marathon. I have two 10ks and maybe another half-marathon planned, so we’ll see! I’m not off to a great start yet, so hopefully my run tomorrow will redeem me.

Do you follow training plans, or do you wing it?

Bull Moose

Isn’t President’s Day the best holiday ever? There’s no school today, which means I have plenty of time to watch History Channel specials πŸ™‚

Random fact about me- I am kind of obsessed with anything that has to do with presidents.

(Clearly, my sister is too.)

I totally have favorite presidents, too-

Really… who doesn’t like Abraham Lincoln?! I’ve been reading a lot of books about him, and he was a really interesting character. He was also the tallest president, and I have a thing for tall guys πŸ™‚ He was also the first president with a beard!

Calvin Coolidge- no one really mentions him, but I like him because he seemed really sassy. Someone once bet him that they could get him to say more than two words. His response? “You lose.” LOVE HIM. He kind of looks like my grandfather, too.

Teddy Roosevelt- he liked to go skinny dipping… in the Potomac River… in the winter. He also got shot in the chest and finished his 90 minute speech before getting help from a doctor. Did I mention he referred to himself as a bull moose and later named a political party that?

I don’t really know anything about Gerald Ford except that he was really clumsy, and that makes me like him.

Okay, enough nerdy talk about presidents… now let’s talk nerdy about oats!

I picked up some oat bran yesterday and couldn’t wait to try it for breakfast. I wasn’t blown away, but that’s probablyΒ  because the portion was so tiny I hardly could taste it. I’m going to try Katie’s voluminous oats method for tomorrow and see if that helps.

I went to Body Pump before breakfast this morning and I can hardly raise my arms now. I used heavier weights this time, and something tells me I will not have use of my arms tomorrow!

Chipotle was having a deal where you could get a free meal for bringing in your race bib, so I picked up a burrito bowl yesterday and saved it for lunch today. I hadn’t been in so long- I missed it!

I got rice, corn salsa, onions and peppers, lettuce, and black beans. I ended up adding Greek yogurt because I didn’t get sour cream on it. I don’t know what they do to that rice to make it so good, but damn it is tasty.

Dinner was a quesadilla and some soup that I made earlier in the day. I totally winged the recipe, and while it’s good, it’s not great. It needs some tweaking before I post it.

It had black beans, zucchini, carrots, red peppers, and sweet potatoes in it, so it was still pretty good!

Dessert was ice cream eaten while watching Apollo 13. Perfect, perfect, perfect night.

Who’s your favorite president? I’m not the only nerd that thinks about these things, right?!
